Departmental Research Objectives:

  • Generate the required DHET research output units per year
  • Conduct supervision during the year of evaluation
  • Work towards postgraduate qualification during the year of evaluation or Nrf rating
  • Demonstrate leadership and reputation in research

Each of these objectives are discussed below.

Generate the required DHET research output units per year

The various output units that can be generated are listed below

  • 4.5 = International Peer Reviewed Books
  • 1 = International Peer Reviewed Chapters in Books
  • 1 = DoE Subsidy Earning Accredited Articles
  • 1 = Non Subsidy Earning Intl Peer Reviews Articles
  • 0.5 = Published Intl Peer Reviewed Conference Proceedings

RICS and SACQSP minimum requirements  = 0.8 units/full-time staff member per year

NMMU minimum requirements  = 1.7 units/full-time staff member per year

Conduct supervision during the year of evaluation

Generally, supervisors should hold a degree qualification equal to the degree being supervised. Supervisory load depends on:

  • Nature of the research
  • Level of academic seniority
  • Experience and proven track record of supervisor
  • Workload of staff member

Work towards postgraduate qualification during the year of evaluation or NRF rating (If already in possession of PhD)

  • SACQSP – 75% of full-time staff members to have a MSc
  • NRF rating essential for serious researchers / academics

Demonstrate leadership and reputation in research

  • Establish research focus areas
  • Increase research impact
