AS stands for Applicant Score. Each Nelson Mandela University undergraduate programme requires a specific score as a basis for admission to the programme. Applicants will need to meet the AS directly, as well as an subject specific pass in order to be considered for a specific programme.

A new admission process for prospective students to Nelson Mandela University has been introduced for the 2020 intake, starting April 2019.

The most significant advances aimed at improving the previous system are:

  • Applicant Score (AS) replaces Admission Point Score (APS);
  • Percentages and not levels (1 to 8) are used to calculate the Applicant Score (AS);
  • Life Orientation is not included in the Applicant Score (AS);
  • Applicants must meet direct entry requirements (AS + subject and % required);
  • Testing as an alternative admissions route is no longer available.

  • How do I calculate my AS?
